Breast Reduction

Process overview

Breast reduction removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin from the breasts and repositions the nipple-areola complex, for a smaller, firmer bust in proportion with the rest of the body. Unlike a breast lift, the main goal here is not simply to raise the breasts but to reduce their volume, which usually also brings significant relief from the physical discomfort caused by their weight. Every surgery is entirely personalized: during your evaluation, Dr. John Malpartida assesses the volume to be removed, the quality and elasticity of the skin, the position of the areola and the patient's expectations, and determines the most appropriate technique for a safe, functional and aesthetic result.

Ideal for women with breast hypertrophy (breasts that are disproportionately large for their frame) who experience back, neck or shoulder pain, discomfort during exercise, skin irritation beneath the breast fold, or difficulty finding clothes that fit well.

Goals

To reduce breast volume to a proportion that balances the body, relieving the associated physical discomfort and achieving a firm, well-positioned bust.

Features

  • This is a surgical procedure performed in an operating room; anesthesia is managed by the anesthesiologist.
  • No implants are involved: the work is done by reducing the patient's own tissue.
  • It usually has a functional benefit alongside the aesthetic one, since it relieves the physical discomfort caused by excess breast weight.
  • The technique and scar pattern are chosen according to the volume to be removed and the quality of the skin.
  • Long-lasting results, with proper weight maintenance.

Benefits & results

  • Relief from back, neck and shoulder pain caused by excess breast weight.
  • Firmer, higher breasts, in proportion with the body.
  • Greater comfort during exercise and when wearing different types of clothing.
  • Areola and nipple repositioned at a more harmonious point.
  • Greater confidence and satisfaction with your body.

What to expect during recovery

  • Swelling (edema) and bruising in the breast area, which subside gradually over the first 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Altered sensitivity or temporary numbness in the nipple or breast skin.
  • Mild to moderate discomfort or pain, manageable with the prescribed medication.
  • Visible scarring depending on the technique used, generally around the areola, vertically down to the fold, and in some cases horizontally along the inframammary fold.
  • Possible temporary or, in rare cases, permanent reduction in nipple sensitivity.
  • Risks inherent to any surgery, such as infection or a reaction to anesthesia, explained in detail during the preoperative evaluation.

Post-operative recommendations

  1. 01Limited activity — avoid raising your arms above shoulder height and lifting weight during the first few weeks.
  2. 02Post-surgical bra — worn continuously for 2 to 3 months, to support the new shape of the bust while it heals.
  3. 03Incision care — keep the area clean and dry as instructed, to support optimal healing.
  4. 04Avoid intense physical exertion — particularly chest and arm exercises, until your doctor approves.
  5. 05Follow-up appointments — attend your scheduled check-ups.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to see the final result?

You will notice an immediate improvement in the size and shape of the bust, but the final result settles between 2 and 3 months after the procedure, once the swelling has fully subsided.

Will the scars be visible?

Yes, because this procedure requires removing excess tissue and skin. How extensive the scar is depends on the volume being removed; scars tend to fade over time and are hidden by underwear or swimwear.

Will it affect my ability to breastfeed in the future?

Depending on the technique used, future breastfeeding may be affected. This is assessed and discussed in detail during your preoperative consultation, particularly for patients who plan to have children later on.
